Wheatland, Missouri (August 30, 2016) – Labor Day Weekend means speed and plenty of it – on the water and dirt – at Lucas Oil Speedway.

The 6th annual Diamond Drag Boat Nationals on the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series fires up with qualifying rounds at 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday, leading into eliminations on Sunday on Lake Lucas.

Stock cars join the fun, turning Saturday into a day-night doubleheader as the Lucas Oil MLRA returns to the dirt track for the Larry Phillips Memorial Presented by G2 Gemini Apparel. The Pitts Homes USRA Modifieds also are on the 7:30 p.m. program.

Fans with tickets to the Diamond Drag Boat Nationals on Saturday – or with a three-day pass to the boat races – include admission to the dirt track.

“Labor Day is considered the conclusion of summer and what better way to celebrate it than a trip to Lucas Oil Speedway for a full weekend of non-stop action,” Lucas Oil Speedway General Manager Dan Robinson said.

“From the pure power and intensity of the Top Fuel Hydro boats that eclipse 250 miles per through the other pro divisions and sportsman classes, it’s going to be three days of fast and furious action on the water.

“Where else can you go and watch the nation’s best drag boats and the region’s best open competition Late models and Modifieds at the same place on the same weekend for one low ticket price? On Saturday, fans can see both the boats and the cars with one ticket.”

Robinson reminds fans that there is ample seating under covered grandstands alongside Lake Lucas – with a terrific view of the boat-race course while providing ample shade.

A quick preview at what to expect:

In the water: Drag boat racing is scheduled in five pro divisions and eight sportsman classes. Qualifying is set to begin at 9 a.m. the first two days with eliminations set to begin at 9 a.m. on the final day. Opening ceremonies with the National Anthem are set before the 10:30 a.m. qualifying sessions for the pro divisions.

In the Top Fuel Hydro class, Bryan Sanders driving the Tommy Thompson-owned Nitrochondriac prevailed at Lake Lucas back in June at the 5th annual John Haas Memorial, clocked at 247.93 miles per hours in the finals at 3.67 seconds.

Nitrochondriac set a new Top Fuel Hydro world record Aug. 13 in qualifying at Marble Falls, Texas, with a 3.3859-second run over 1,000 feet. Nitrochondriac sits atop the Top Fuel championship standings with only three races remaining.

Other points leaders in the pro divisions are Mike DeClark in Little White Lie (Top Alcohol Hydro), Don Bausher in Habit Forming (Top Alcohol Flat), Kevin Helm in Fist Full of Dollar (Pro Mod) and Tom Brasher in Desperado (Pro Outlaw).

Kids 11-and-under also are free on Friday as part of the season-long Free Kids Friday promotion.

The Lucas Oil Speedway Drag Boat Lake – approximately 4,000 feet long and 400 feet wide – is the world’s only purpose-built drag boat lake and located just south of the dirt track.

On the dirt: The Lucas Oil MLRA is charging into the home stretch of its schedule and finds Jesse Stovall of Billings leaders reigning series champ Terry Phillips of Springfield by 92 points.

This is the second straight year that Lucas Oil Speedway has played host to the Larry Phillips Memorial, paying tribute to one of the greatest to ever drive a race car. Phillips, who died in 2004, was a five-time NASCAR Weekly Racing Series National Champion and is on the ballot for the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

The winner of the feature will earn $5,075 – with the extra $75 a tribute to Phillips’ iconic car number. R.C. Whitwell won last year’s Phillips Memorial for his first MLRA win.

The Larry Phillips Memorial follows an MLRA stop at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., on Friday night for the Clyde Ellis Memorial. Only three races remain following next weekend, including the season-concluding 3rd annual Fall Nationals Oct. 7-8 at Lucas Oil Speedway.
